Star names mixing philosophy and music at Hay on Wye Festival.

8:00am Sunday 9th May 2010

THE world’s only philosophy and music festival, How the Light Gets In, is back – bigger and better than before with more than 100 events taking place in Hay-on-Wye between May 28 and June 6.

Leading thinkers in every field will mix with cutting edge musicians and performers to excite the imagination and renew the spirit.

This year’s programme includes a host of new events including The Good Delusion, The Chosen Species? Reclaiming the Body, and Being Conscious.

Live and night sessions will feature the likes of ‘nufolk poster boy’ Johnny Flynn (The Times), Radio 1’s Bethan Elfyn, ‘Valleys’ Nico’ Cate le Bon (NME), London’s favourite literary salon The Book Club Boutique, and original comedienne Josie Long.

Among the 100-plus events are The Dogs of War, in which influential Labour politician Jon Cruddas, Britain’s foremost neo- Conservative commentator, Douglas Murray, and leading Marxist theorist Alex Callinicos take up arms to ask: “Is violence an essential part of being human?”

On June 6, best-selling author Philip Pullman and award-winning physicist Sir Roger Penrose will explore how that most elusive of faculties – creativity – has helped us unlock the undiscovered country of the mind and the mysteries of the cosmos.

The previous night, Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and John Rostron, the duo behind the successful Swn Festival, curate a night of cutting-edge music and eclectic beats. Featuring live sets from Muchuu, King Creosote and Sweet Baboo, the night ends with an explosive DJ set.

Elsewhere on the programme you’ll find Mark Vernon, author of The Meaning of Friendship, arguing that friendship deserves to be as celebrated and supported as marriage, eminent economist Will Hutton, founder and editor of The Idler Tom Hodgkinson, and bestselling author and awardwinning journalist Douglas Murray asking whether work provides meaning and purpose or a distraction from the real business of life.
