BOKA Halat, a storming dance and concert band playing English folk melodies on fiddle and melodeon and Gambian rhythm section (sabars, djembe, bongo etc) are appearing at Gwernyfed Drama Studio at Three Cocks, Glasbury, on Saturday at 7.30pm.
The band was originally created by English musician Roger Watson and Musa Mboob, from the Gambia.
The name means Mutual Inspiration in the Wolof language of Gambia/Senegal. Add fellow musicians, Ousman Beyai, from the Gambia, and English fiddle player Tom Fairbairn and you've got an extremely talented and energetic line-up guaranteed to get you moving.
The first half of the evening sees Boka Halat in concert with the second half a ceilidh (plus caller). Tickets cost £9/£7 concessions.
There is also an afternoon dance workshop with Boka Halat in Glasbury Village Hall from 2pm to 4.30pm. The workshop will focus on the blending of English country dance with African rhythms, inspired by the natural fusion which led to the Caribbean quadrilles.
The workshop costs £7 and is suitable for ages eight and up. For tickets, call Cheryl on 01497 847676, email boxoffice@glasburyart.co.uk or visit glasburyart.co.uk
