THE new season's programme from Hereford Concert Society once again fufils the society's aspiration of bringing acclaimed artists to Hereford.
Opening the season is one of Britain's finest string quartets, The Dante Quartet, renowned for the emotional intensity of its performances and its imaginative programming.
The past two years have seen the quartet travelling far and wide in the UK and Europe, and regularly broadcasting live on BBC Radio 3. The programme for the concert society, on Wednesday, October 10, at The Courtyard, features quartets by Haydn, Ian Venables and Elgar.
The second concert on Monday, November 5, features one of the world's greatest early music sopranos, Dame Emma Kirkby joined for the evening by period instrumental ensemble Florilegium, who have established a reputation for stylish and exciting interpretations of music from the baroque era to the early romantic revolution.
In the new year, on Janury 17, The Classic Buskers (formerly the Cambridge Buskers) are at the Courtyard with a programme of Micro Classics - Classical Music without the boring bits', among them Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, The Ride of the Valkyries (in costume), Seasoning from Vivalidi and a selection of deeply ethnic folk music from very unlikely countries'.
The fourth concert in the 2007-2008 series is given by Quintessence, a wind quintet formed in 1995, making a return visit to Hereford with a programme Exploring the Two Americas'.
Then, on March 11, Llyr Williams, one of the outstanding pianists of his generation performs a programme of Brahms, Schumann and Chopin. In recent months, Llyr has appeared as one of the accompanists at the Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
The series ends on Thursday, April 24, with a recital by Australian-born guitarist Craig Ogden, who made his debut at London's Royal Albert Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra playing Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez.
