Times have changed, no doubt about it – social media and mobile phones have seen to that – but the search for love remains timeless. And Jackie, 54 and newly divorced, is ready to move on and get back on the relationship roundabout … and as she packs up her old life she comes across a stash of her old Jackie magazines and re- connects with her younger self … does the past hold the key to a happy future?

The plot is slender, but touches on relationships in many guises – Jackie on a blind date, her husband feeling increasingly out of his depth and his comfort zone with the younger woman he’s traded his wife in for, Jackie’s son nursing a passion for a mystery woman ‘Are you in love or just infatuated?’’ asks the issue of Jackie he and his mate find lying around, and friendship as Jackie’s friend Jill stands shoulder to shoulder with her through the mad maze of moving on.

And behind it all, telling the story, punctuating every episode, is the music of the time … with a rendition of Puppy Love that’s guaranteed to have you almost crying with laughter … creating a show that’s got the feel-good factor running through it from start to finish. The energy levels on stage are through the roof with stunning choreography by Arlene Phillips that perfectly encapsulates, tongue in cheek, the way we were on the dance floor.

There’s nothing not to love about this show – it’s cleverly constructed, with seventies classics (played live on stage) setting the scene, from What Becomes of the Broken Hearted through to I Can See Clearly Now signposting Jackie’s journey and pitch perfect performances from everyone, not to mention the teentsiest bit of scene stealing from Bob Harms as barman Frankie. He’s hard to take your eyes off whenever he’s centre stage and, in one memorable scene, even when he’s not!

Jackie the Musical is a joy – Janet Dibley perfectly conveys the bemusement of a woman who hasn’t quite ended up where she thought she was headed, while Daisy Steere as the young Jackie encapsulates a 70s teenager, enchantingly ignorant of how messy life can get and underscoring how far facebook is from what looks, at this distance, like the long lost near-innocence of every 70s teen’s ‘bible’, Jackie.
