THE Velvet Violin cabaret kicks off its autumn season on Sunday in Presteigne with a remarkable collection of musicians from Bristol, The Pindrop Band.

The Pindrop Band play an intriguing mix of instruments which include several that they have made themselves. Expect an African tin harp made from an olive oil can, a 'Tinklele' (tin ukulele), 'Tinvolin' (tin violin), a Celtic knee harp, acoustic bass and percussion 'brooms' which all help to create their beautiful layered harmonies.

As their name suggests, this quirky band love acoustic music and like to perform without the aid of huge amplification systems (just a single mic to give the vocals some support.) The eight-piece collective play in lots of styles, from jazz to folk, from roots to classical, from Buena Vista Social Club to Pop with a generous sprinkling of original songs. The Pindrop Band are serious musicians but never fail to send people home with smiles on their faces.

The Velvet Violin house band will be John Hymas and Dave Luke. Author and broadcaster Ian Marchant will be taking on the role of resident pop quiz master.

The Velvet Violin cabaret evening starts at 7pm on Sunday at The Assembly Rooms in Presteigne.
