INTERNATIONAL organ virtuoso David Briggs, one of the most brilliant performers of his generation, will be giving a concert at Hereford Cathedral on Tuesday at 7.15pm.

David is no stranger to Hereford, having been assistant organist at the cathedral from 1985 to 1988, going on to be organist at Truro and Gloucester cathedrals before embarking on a highly successful career as a concert organist.

He has called his concert ‘The Art of Transcription’, and it will feature a number of works originally written for orchestra, including Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis, Debussy’s Clair de lune and Ravel’s La valse, as well as music from Brahms’ Hungarian Dances and Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust. It will conclude with one of David’s legendary improvisations.

Orchestral music such as this is well suited to the rich tonal palette of Hereford’s world-famous Willis organ, and David’s transcriptions of the Impressionist music of Ravel and Debussy in particular are sure to take full advantage of the huge range of colour available on the instrument.

Geraint Bowen, director of music at the cathedral, said: "I’ve heard David play many times, and his concerts are always incredibly exciting and entertaining. This is sure to be an unmissable event."

Tickets for the concert are available from Hereford Cathedral Shop (01432 374210 or shop@herefordcathedral.org) or on the door.
