HEREFORD Musical Theatre Company presents a concert of songs from musicals old and new, guaranteed to prompt nostalgic memories.

Let The People Sing will see a cast ranging from the company’s youth group to long-standing members under the directorial partnership of Ann Kemp and Doug Steane.

With the anniversary of VE Day and having been an evacuee during the second world war, Doug Steane saw this as an opportunity to put on a concert featuring songs that “were all around during the war and when I was evacuated to Devon, such as When They Sound the Last All Clear and The White Cliffs of Dover as well as the silly songs, like Zip-A-Dee-Doo.

“I can remember hearing the announcement by Neville Chamberlain that Britain was now at war with Germany like it was yesterday. My father was a captain in the army, and I was nine years old when I was sent away, and I returned just two weeks before the war ended. I remember when all the lights came back on in theatre land, so we decided to include songs like When the Lights Go On Again, and I’m Gonna Get Lit Up. We then thought this would be an opportunity to include songs that have been popular in theatre shows since the end of WWII.”

Let The People Sing will be at The Tomkins Theatre on Whitecross Road from Thursday, June 25 to Saturday, June 25 at 7.30pm every evening. To book, call 0333 666 3366 or visit ticketsource.co.uk/hmtc
