AS a curtain raiser for this year’s Harp Summer School, presented by Glasbury Arts and Theatr Brycheiniog in August, Glasbury Arts welcomes renowned classical harpist, Katherine Thomas for an open air recital in the Rose Garden at Gwernyfed High School on Sunday June 28.

Associate principal harpist with the orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Katherine plays both the pedal and triple harps and has performed with artists varying from Bryn Terfel and Roland Villazon to Katherine Jenkins and the Manic Street Preachers.

Katherine will be joined for an afternoon recital by Laurence Kempton, violinist with Welsh National Opera. On graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, Laurence joined the English String Orchestra where he worked with his childhood hero, Yehudi Menuhin.

Laurence and Katherine present a programme ranging from the classical (Handel's Sonata in D and Saint-Saëns' Fantasy for violin and harp) to the more contemporary (Tangos by Piazzolla). Following their debut recording, the Enigma Duo will also play some of their favourite songs from the stage and screen.

In the event of poor weather, the recital will take place in the drama studio.
