THE Imperfect Pearl, or perola barroca (the original description of Baroque music) is a musical Baroque production created by Mark Latimer and Heulwen Phillips.

The show is part opera, part concert and part drama, and features beautiful Baroque music from Italy and South America, including works by Domenico Zipoli, Andreas Falconieri, Allesandro Scarlatti, Manuel de Sumaya, Gaspar Fernandes, and Juan Garcia de Zespedes, and the sublime Dulce Jesus Mio (by an anonymous Baroque composer from South America).

In 1717 Domenico Zipoli left the music salons of Rome and travelled to the rainforests of South America. For more than 200 years his music was lost and his story was shrouded in mystery. Then in 1972, his scores were found in a Bolivian church toilet.

The Imperfect Pearl is a specially written opera which tells Zipoli's story. It begins in Cadiz and takes us to the rainforests of South America where we learn about his passions and what drove him to embark on such a dangerous adventure.

For more than 200 years the life and music of Domenico Zipoli was shrouded in mystery, until 5,500 pieces of his manuscript were found in a Bolivian Church in 1972. Mark and Heulwen have based this story on fragments gathered of Zipoli's fascinating life illustrated by the music which he composed in Italy and Paraguay, music he would have known, and music of his contemporaries.
