INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed vocal ensemble Ex Cathedra, under its founder and director Jeffrey Skidmore brings a Christmas feast of early music to Hereford Cathedral on Wednesday .

Ex Cathedra is renowned not only for the high quality of its performances but also for the distinctive atmosphere it creates in its concerts. In a welcome return to Hereford, Ex Cathedra plans to take its audience back in time to the reign of Elizabeth I and the exquisitely beautiful music performed for the Queen over the Christmas season.

An Elizabethan Christmas features some of the best-known and best-loved music by four of the greatest composers of the Tudor period – Byrd, Tallis, Gibbons and Sheppard. William Byrd’s timeless Mass for Four Voices, John Sheppard’s stunning Verbum Caro and the sublime Videte miraculum by Thomas Tallis. Verse anthems by Orlando Gibbons such as This is the Record of John and consort songs for private and secular use complete the programme.

Founded by Jeffrey Skidmore in its home city of Birmingham, Ex Cathedra has won widespread international acclaim. It presents its own season of concerts in Birmingham and London and has recently appeared at major festivals in UK including the BBC Proms, Aldeburgh, Canterbury, Edinburgh and Salisbury as well as touring to Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and to New York.
