IN the years before the first world war Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, two of Hungary’s greatest composers,set out to document the traditional folk songs and dances of their country, and later used many of these tunes and rhythms in their classical compositions.

On Wednesday, November 12 in Richard Booth’s Bookshop in Hay, Marcia Crayford, Moray Welsh and Suzie Meszaros, three musicians well known to local music lovers through the Mid Wales Chamber Orchestra and the recent Dragonfly ensemble, play works for two violins, violin and viola and string trio by Bartok and Kodaly. Actor Dan Tomlinson reads extracts from the composers’ letters and writings.

Adding to the flavour of Hungary, a light Hungarian supper with Hungarian wines will be available in the bookshop café before the concert (advance booking required)
