JOHNChallenger, a former chorister at Hereford Cathedral, is returning to Hereford to give a recital at the city’s Belmont Abbey next week.

John, who is now assistant director of music at Salisbury Cathedral, was a chorister at Hereford under Dr Roy Massey and Geraint Bowen. He became Head Chorister and went on to be the cathedral’s Boy Bishop, later becoming an organ scholar at St George’s Chapel, Windsor and then St John’s College Cambridge, before taking up his post at Salisbury two years ago.

John will be playing an exciting programme of music including Elgar’s Imperial March and other English music by Stanford and Alfred Hollins. Bach is represented by his Prelude and Fugue in C minor and from France John will play music by Vierne and Langlais.

The concert, on Tuesday, September 30, is promoted by Herefordshire Organists’ Society. Further details are available from the Society’s secretary, Fiona Chryssides, firbush@btinternet.com
