CONCERTS for Craswall presents an exciting and varied concert on Saturday, July 5, with a programme that includes music from two composers with Hereford connections - Elgar’s Cello Concerto, his last great elegiac masterpiece and Afar, a piece by Hereford composer Anthony Powers, commissioned by Concerts for Craswall for their 10th birthday.

The concert begins with Mozart’s fizzing Overture to The Marriage of Figaro; then comes Elgar’s Cello Concerto, a deeply moving reflection on times gone by, and the tragedy of the First World War. The solo part will be taken by Amy Norrington, who has generously performed for Craswall over many years. After the interval comes Afar, exploring Anthony Powers’ feelings while viewing the Black Mountains, where he used to live, from the house above the river Wye in Hereford where he now composes. The concert comes to a close with Schumann’s gloriously romantic Symphony No. 4 in D minor.

Most of The Craswall Players will be coming up from London. Three trombone players and a trumpeter from the Royal Welsh School of Music, and a young timpanist from Hereford, will join them. They will be conducted by Sam Laughton.

Elgar and Powers for Craswall is at dore Abbey on Saturday, July 5 at 7.30pm. For further details visit concertsforcraswall.org or call 01981 510332.
