THE choir of St Nicholas Church will be performing Philip Ledger's Requiem on Sunday as part of a service to mark the start of Holy Week.
Sub-titled "A Thanksgiving For Life", the work intermingles words from the traditional Latin requiem mass with poems by the Hereford mystic and poet, Thomas Traherne.
Vicar of Credenhill from 1657 to 1669, Traherne's poetry was largely unpublished during his lifetime but has recently come to prominence at a time when his themes find a modern day echo. His work portrays a belief that everything is part of an all-encompassing God, exults in the beauty and power of nature to inform the mind and views the world with a refreshing and child-like ecstasy.
Ledger's Requiem draws widely on Traherne's work to augment the traditional requiem in an affirmation of life.
The service is at St Nicholas Church, Friars St, Hereford starting at 6.30pm
