Beethoven and jazz at Dore Abbey

1:22pm Thursday 4th September 2008

A WEEKEND of contrasts will take place in Dore Abbey on Saturday and Sunday, September 13 and 14, though both will capitalise on the building’s acoustics.

On Saturday, renowned conductor Paul Spicer will hold the annual choral workshop, coaching up to 150 voices, in Beethoven Mass in C, which has been described as ‘a long underrated masterpiece’.

A few places are still available for the workshop. The Mass will be performed at 5pm and tickets at £3, will be available at the door.

On Sunday evening at 7.30pm, the Mark Latimer Trio, sponsored by the Hereford Times, will bring jazz to the Abbey.

Mark Latimer has been described by The Guardian as ‘one of the UK’s most remarkable jazz pianists’. He studied at the Royal College of Music and has performed and broadcast extensively in more than 25 countries in venues that range from the Royal Opera House to the Brecon and Cheltenham jazz festivals.

Alongside Mark will be drummer and percussionist Bob Dick, who founded Jazz Brycheiniog in 1995 and brings a panoply of pop and jazz creativity to the evening.

Bass player Steve Tarner, whose originality and invention createst beautiful melodic lines and contours, is the third member of the trio. For details, call 01873 821456.
