A HIGHLY acclaimed duo, Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth Laprelle, who are not only musicians, but also visual artists, historians and storytellers, will be at The Assembly Rooms in Presteigne on Saturday.

Anna and Elizabeth have a distinctive approach to their work. Inspired by the rich tradition of the ballad singers of the 1930s and 1940s in Vermont and rural Virginia, the pair gather songs and stories from archives and visits with the singers and their families. They bring old songs and tales to life in a sparse Appalachian style with clawhammer banjo, fiddle, guitar and close vocal harmony. Their performances are illustrated using "crankies" — scrolling pictures, papercuts and shadow puppets, and their music is interspersed with stories and anecdotes about the songs and the traditional music practitioners they have learned from.

The pair visited the UK for a short run of gigs last year and attracted high praise for their musicianship. Their growing acclaim has seen them perform this summer at the prestigious Sidmouth and Cambridge Folk Festivals.

Anna and Elizabeth will be at The Assembly Rooms in Presteigne on Saturday at 8pm. Tickets are available from The Workhouse, Courtyard Antiques and online at wegottickets.com/event/359830
