Say cheese - cheddar tasting in Ross-on-Wye

3:00pm Friday 9th December 2011

RICHARD and Hayley Mayo, owners of Truffles Delicatessen in Ross-on-Wye, were astounded at the interest shown when they invited customers to their first ever cheese-tasting event.

Richard and Hayley chose the ever popular Cheddar cheese as the subject of their first ever in-store presentation and tasting event, featuring eight totally different Cheddars.

“You’ll find one particular mass-produced factory Cheddar in one-in-four fridges in the UK,” said Richard. “It’s great for piling into baked potatoes and using for cooking but for a more interesting flavour you can’t beat the real thing.”

Richard advised guests to look at the cheese, touch it, break it smell it, chew it, taste it and identify the flavours – sweet, salty, buttery, sharp, bitter, fresh vegetable, fruits and nuts and even grass.

“Richard was a very knowledgeable and entertaining host,” said local businesswoman, Helen Kiddy. “I was totally fascinated.”
