Theatregoers on the Welsh border in for an autumn treat

THEATREGOERS on the Welsh border are in for an autumn of highs and lows with a dramatic new season at the Borough Theatre in Abergavenny announced alongside a new line-up of classical music at Brecon’s Theatr Brycheiniog.

The Borough programme boasts a “wealth of drama”, including a oneman interpretation of Jerome K Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat from Rodney Bewes and a London Classic Theatre performance of Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker.

Charles Dickens fans are also in for a treat when the Northumberland Touring Company performs The Old Curiosity Shop and storyteller Mike Maran returns with A Christmas Carol.

An exploration of gang culture in Crime of the Century by the Chickenshed Theatre Company also brings a touch of the modern day, as do musical tributes from the ELO Experience, T-Rextasy and Talon - The Best of the Eagles.

The music continues at Theatr Brycheiniog with appearances from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Mid Wales Opera and The Texas Tenors.

Local violinist Rachel Podger also fronts another Brecon Baroque Festival in October, while ex-The Alarm frontman Mike Peters heads a stellar list of well-known faces including camp comic Julian Clary, Archers actor Charles Collingwood and cricket star David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd.

An appearance from Postman Pat has also been arranged for the kids, who in turn can enjoy performances of Aladdin, Michael Morpurgo’s Farm Boy and the Stick Man at Abergavenny.

Highlights also include various community productions, stand-up comedy with Teeside’s Patrick Monahan and Guardian columnist Shazia Mirza, and a grand X-Mas Factor Final at the Borough Theatre in December.
