Inspirational DJ to show off his skills in Hereford

8:00am Tuesday 9th March 2010

ONE of Massive Attack’s musical inspirations will be bringing his turntable skills to Hereford.

As young teenagers, Grant Marshall and Robert Del Naja used to hide outside the Star and Garter pub in Bristol to hear DJ Derek’s music.

Derek had made a name for himself within the Jamaican community and certainly stood out as a white accountant playing West Indian music. He even learned patois and now commentates through his set in a language Ali G can only envy.

The 67-year-old’s fame has only grown since he gave up his office job and he has become a festival favourite at the Big Chill in Eastnor while also gathering a loyal following at the Notting Hill Arts Club in London.

DJ Derek will be bringing a selection of his 50,000 reggae and dancehall tracks to The Jailhouse in Hereford on March 12. Support comes from ChrisMand Cut la Vis.
