Hereford Cathedral’s famous Chained Library was not the only library of its kind in Hereford, as a special temporary exhibition demonstrates.
On display in the New Library Building is a selection of volumes, Brewster’s Books, collected by Dr William Brewster and bequeathed to All Saints’ Church in the 18th century.
Two oak bookcases were made and the method of chaining the books was imitated from the library in Hereford Cathedral.
The All Saints’ Chained Library was purchased in the mid-1990s for the Mappa Mundi Trust, and is now located in the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition.
Among the fascinating volumes that can be seen in the exhibition are an early printed Welsh Bible, a 17th century illustrated book on Lapland and an interesting book on the mechanics of printing.
The exhibition at Hereford Cathedral runs until Monday, May 31.
Opening times until March 27 are Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm (last admission 3.30pm).
From March 29 it is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm (last admission 4.30pm), and on Sundays, April 4, May 2 and May 30.
