Herefordshire jeweller Sue Lane announces 2009 programme of workshops

EIGHT short years after graduating, Herefordshire jeweller Sue Lane is living her dream – working for herself, running her own business from her home near Docklow.

When she graduated from Middlesex University, Sue moved home, temporarily she thought at the time, to Herefordshire, but the planned return to London never happened as she first got a workshop at The Courtyard, then met Adey, who is now her husband, and bought the house and workshop where the couple now live and work.

After her best Christmas yet, Sue has been spending January, as she does every year, doing drawings, sketching and making paper templates of new work.

“I can’t carry on doing the same designs,” says Sue, perhaps best known both locally and nationally for her highly distinctive rings.

“People need to see new things, and a designer’s work has to evolve to get into big shows like Origins and Goldsmiths.”

In addition to working on new designs, Sue has also been finalising the details of this year’s programme of workshops, the first of which – a general silver working day – takes place on Saturday, February 7.

“I get as much from the workshops as the students,” says Sue. “Working on my own all week, it’s great to be with other people and often their ideas make me think about things in a different way.”

Sue’s workshops are open to everyone, regardless of their experience.

“People who have never picked up silver before and want to be able to do this are so thrilled at the end of a workshop – it’s as if I have given them a really expensive piece of jewellery.”
