FOLLOWING on from the success of Leominster based auctioneer Brightwells' previous two day sales in November and March, a third is to be staged on Wednesday and Thursday, June 25, with over 800 lots on offer.

The spring sale was received well by vendors and purchasers alike, and as a result the auction produced some excellent results. The top prices achieved were; £35,000 for a stunning marquetry cabinet on stand in the manner of Gerrit Jensen, followed by a pair of impressive Chinese blue and white jars, in the oriental ceramics section, which realised £10,000.

There are a wide spectrum of items included in the summer sale on June 24-25, ranging from a period walnut bureau bookcase to a contemporary bronze sculpture.

Highlights of the picture section include a gouache by John Piper, which depicts a view of St David's Cathedral, a fine oil painting titled Sunset – Returning Home, by Joseph Farquharson RA and an interesting private collection of oil paintings and watercolours from Shrewsbury, which includes works by Phillip Wilson Steer, Duncan Grant and Tom Mostyn.

Among the jewellery section, a Victorian ruby and diamond cluster ring is to be offered with interesting provenance. This ring was given by Queen Victoria to the dance instructor Mrs Wordsworth who taught the young princesses, and subsequently passed on to the vendor's grandmother.

The coin section contains an excellent collection of English gold and silver coins. One of the more notable is a Charles II 1662 Gold Broad, a very rare coin indeed, it is thought only 3400 were actually struck and it is the first milled gold coin struck after the restoration.

The sale also includes strong collections of silver, ceramics and furniture, amongst these are lots from the estate of the late Martin Miller, Great Brampton House, Madley, Herefordshire.
