Today is spent at sea, enjoying the atmosphere on board and getting to know Marco Polo's wonderful on-board amenities.
In 2015, Marco Polo's first call will be at the historic Danish port-city of Aalborg, set on the mighty Limfjord on North Jutland, with its Viking heritage and its laid-back, outdoor lifestyle.
This morning Marco Polo arrives in the Baltic port of Warnemunde, gateway to the city of Rostock. Seat of northern Europe's oldest university, Rostock retains much of its medieval charm in the gabled houses and preserved warehouses surrounding Neuer Markt, the city's main square. However, for many the main attraction of this stop will be our optional excursion to Berlin. Stroll from the arch of the Brandenburg Gate down Unter den Linden to explore the former East German sector, browse the shops on the 'Ku'damm' and take in the various remnants of 20th Century conflict - from Hitler's Bunker to Checkpoint Charlie.
Today is spent at sea, enjoying Marco Polo's onboard comforts and the clear light and clean air for which Baltic Sea cruising is renowned.
Almost impossibly beautiful, the Estonian capital Tallinn, with its enchanting and virtually pristine Old Town, is one of Europe's most scenic cities. Discover this timeless gem, with its winding cobbled streets of storybook houses, spectacular steepled churches, ancient buildings and Toompea Castle.
Days Seven and Eight
Marco Polo will spend two days at the docks of St Petersburg, one of the world's most startling, shimmering, glorious cities. We'll have lots of time in the city, so don't miss the incomparable Hermitage Museum, the wide canal-side boulevards and the chance to explore the city's Haymarket, so redolent with scenes from Dostoyevsky's novels. Gaze in awe at the opulence of the Marinsky Theatre, home to the world renowned Kirov Ballet, soak up the modern 'European' atmosphere, and perhaps join an excursion to the Tsars' Summer Palace at Petrodvorets.
This morning's destination is the wonderful port of Helsinki, where the City Hall overlooks the fresh fish stalls and historic, covered Market Hall in Market Square. Stroll through Esplanade Park, and take in the panoramic views of the city and the sea beyond from the cathedral tower before we set sail once more in the afternoon.
Be on deck early this morning as Marco Polo passes the myriad islands surrounding the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The city itself is built across 14 such islets, and is best explored on foot. One third water, one third city and one third green landscape, Stockholm offers a wonderful mix of historic sights, labyrinthine cobbled streets and fine parks.
Another day spent at sea, reliving the memories of a wonderful holiday.
It's worth rising early to catch the last stages of Marco Polo's passage back through the Kiel Canal to Brunsbuttel, today. The rest of the day is spent at sea.
Marco Polo arrives back in Tilbury at the end of the cruise.
