Go back to school and get a taste of teaching

PEOPLE can get a taste for teaching at a special training day being held in Herefordshire.

The Robert Owen Society, based in Herefordshire, is giving anyone interested in becoming a teacher the chance to find out more about the profession.

The free teaching taster courses are being held in the Marches and West Midlands region from Monday, July 6, and will give people a chance to go into schools, speak to professionals and to see what teaching is really like from inside the classroom.

The Robert Owen Society is specifically looking for men interested in primary teaching and for people interested in teaching secondary maths, modern foreign languages, design and technology or music to take part in one of these courses.

As long as you are intending to apply to train to teach in one of these areas within one year, these courses will be a great way to find out what teaching is all about.

Abi Horsburgh, customer relations and marketing manager at the society, said: “These free courses are an ideal opportunity for anyone who is thinking about training to teach but is unsure about what teaching will fully entail. The courses will give candidates a real taste of the profession and they can make sure it is the right career for them before they commit to applying for a teacher training course.”

The three-day courses have been specifically designed for those who are interested in training to become a teacher find out what it’s like working in a school.

Day one of the course will be an introductory day, where people will be given an overview of teaching, learning and assessment, the school curriculum and the roles and responsibilities of the people who work in schools.

Day two is spent in a school, observing lessons and talking to teachers. On the final day, the school visit will be reviewed and people can discuss their next steps with the society’s course team.

These courses are free of charge to participants and are funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (www.tda.gov.uk).
