A diversity of crops tests skill of judges

THE main field and livestock competitions have been judged for the Harewood End Agricultural Society. And over two days the judges covered a large number of farms across a wide area of South Herefordshire and West Gloucestershire.

The diversity of crops and enterprises provided a real test for them and the quality of the entries was as high as ever.

The two principal prizes of the best managed farm over and under 900 acres were won by Frank, Joan and Mark Green of St Owens Cross and Bryan, Jean and Robert Davies of Hope Mansell.

Best managed farm, under 900 acres: 1 E B & Y J Davies & Son, Hopes Ash Farm; 2 Bailey Farms, Upton Court, Upton Bishop; 3 A J & C I Snell, Pencoyd Court Farm, Harewood End.

Best managed livestock, under 900 acres: 1 N & S Green, Much Fawley Farm, Fawley; 2 Bailey Farms, Upton Court, Upton Bishop; 3 (equal) J Davies and J Jehan, Ashe Farm, Pencraig.

Field of winter wheat: 1 David Watkins, Ballingham Hall, Holme Lacy; 2 P G & C P Whitehouse, Bradley Court Farm, Mitcheldean; 3 Cobrey Farms, Coughton, Ross-on-Wye.
