HEREFORDSHIRE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION - Today has launched its Surviving Winter appeal. The annual campaign primarily helps older and vulnerable people facing fuel poverty in the colder months. In 2013/14, the Office for National Statistics estimate that 18,000 more people in England and Wales died in the winter months, and the West Midlands had the highest rate of what are termed ‘excess deaths’ – 14% more people dying in winter than at other times of the year.Herefordshire Community Foundation is one of 33 community foundations running the Surviving Winter campaign across the UK, working with UK Community Foundation, the membership body for community foundations in the UK. Across the UK last year, Surviving Winter raised £1.46m and helped 23,000 individuals.Surviving Winter started as a vehicle to recycle Winter Fuel Payments that people had received but didn’t feel they needed, but quickly expanded to take in donations from people of all ages, and of all amounts, which are directed to the local groups supporting vulnerable people during winter. Donations pay for everything from individual bursaries for fuel bills, hot water bottles, lunch clubs for older people to boiler repairs.Herefordshire Community Foundation Director David Barclay said: “Surviving Winter is a vital campaign that every year helps some of the most vulnerable people in our county. Many people are battling fuel poverty, and some are forced to cut back on food or skip meals to pay heating bills. And we know that last year around 18,000 deaths – mostly older people – were due to winter conditions. The Surviving Winter appeal is a small but important intervention in this cycle. There are many ways we can help our elderly or vulnerable neighbours throughout the year but, during the winter months, our help may mean the difference between life and death”.“We are proud of what our Community Foundation has achieved in the four years Surviving Winter has been running and have helped many local people. But we can’t help more people on our own. We rely on donations of all sizes, and we are constantly amazed by the willingness of people to help those struggling to stay warm and well. We are asking again if people can consider giving any amount to our appeal.”Please help our elderly or vulnerable citizens this winter by making a donation to Herefordshire’s Surviving Winter appeal. To donate visit our website herefordshirefoundation.org or send a cheque made out to Herefordshire Community Foundation to David Barclay, Herefordshire Community Foundation, The Fred Bulmer Centre, Wall St, Hereford HR4 9HP. Presteigne

NEW LED CHRISTMAS LIGHTS - It is some 12 years since the Christmas lights were last renewed in Presteigne, and the Chamber of Trade, who have provided lights in the town for many years, decided to renew them because the old ones were becoming unreliable. They started two years ago with a project driven by Colin Felgate and James Tennant-Eyles. Colin and James researched what new types of lights were available, and what other nearby towns in Wales were using. Sample lights of various types were obtained and tested and then a group of chamber members chose the ones they felt were most suitable. A team of volunteers drawn from Chamber of Trade members and Town Councillors, plus friends and family, met over several evenings and weekends at a local farmer’s barn to assemble the festoons.Colin says he is “delighted with the new system which will be less risky and more reliable due to the low voltage, and much cheaper to run because of the LEDs.”James assisted Colin and also successfully applied to Powys County Council for grant funding for 50% of the cost of some £4000. The Chamber already had some £2000 built up from fundraising for new lights over the years since the last time the lights were renewed. James who has run the lights project for the COT for some 15 years and is now handing over that responsibility to Colin, said “what fantastic value the lights in Presteigne are”.Many towns in Wales have to pay a specialist contractor to install lights at a cost of thousands of pounds every year. In Presteigne it is all done by volunteers free of charge, and the annual running costs, funded by the Town Council, are in the hundreds. On behalf of the Chamber of Trade, Colin and James would like to thank Powys County Council for funding 50% of the cost of the new lights, Presteigne Town Council for funding the annual running costs, and last but not least the many volunteers that helped with the assembly and installation.
