A COUNTY site could be set to join an official battlefield register if a new project is successful.

As part of its Battlefields Register Review project, English Heritage is currently working with the Battlefields Trust to research Mortimer's Cross battlefield site, near Wigmore.

The organisations are in the process of assessing the site and if it is found to have enough “special historic interest” to merit further investigation, the owner and local planning authority would be notified of an application to make it an official battlefield site.

The Battle of Mortimer's Cross was one of the most major battles in the Wars of the Roses – fought between the House of York and the House of Lancaster.

For many years, re-enactors have been visiting Herefordshire to turn back the clock to the county's most famous battle.

But making it an official battlefield site is not likely to be a quick process.

Following the initial assessment stage, further research would be carried out – potentially including a visit – to find out more about the site.

That information would then be put into an initial report, comprising information on the history and description of the site – for consultation with the owner, local planning authority, the Battlefields Trust and the applicant.

Those affected would then be invited to respond within 21 days to the facts laid out, before all the information and representations would be considered, and a final decision made by English Heritage.

If anyone has any information or local stories about the site that they would like to share, or would like to be put on a mailing list to stay up to date with how the project is progressing, they can email Patricia Pothecary, local community coordinator, on pothpoth1@googlemail.com
