HEREFORD Roller Skating Club has set the wheels in motion to create a new community hub in the city.

The group, which trains at Aylestone Business and Enterprise College, will soon be competing at Foley Trading Estate.

The club has changed its name to "the Core" and has set its sights on running other sports in the city.

Archery, radio-controlled cars and laser quest are all set to be played at the site, while it will also be fitted out for birthday parties and other functions.

"We are a community interest company that is registered with Companies House but has the benefits of a charity," said Samantha Bushkes, creator of the Core.

"I want people to say that it is a mini leisure centre and for small groups to use it.

"We want to have solar panels to insulate the building, a strong maple floor and a bar.

"I am very keen for it to be a community hub – that is my dream."

The Core will receive the keys to the building on Friday after being awarded £3,000 from Hereford City Council.

Two grants worth a total of £115,000 have also been applied for to Sport England and the Veolia Environmental Trust to ensure that the club's dream can be realised.

"We aim to replace all the windows and doors and create disabled access to the facility," said Mrs Bushkes.

"We are in desperate need for volunteers and have started a paint appeal.

"The walls need a fresh coat of paint and many people have half tins of paint in their sheds and garages.

"Ideally, we would like white, magnolia or cream paints."
