Volunteers help visually impaired people to stay healthy

Hereford Times: People taking part in the walks. People taking part in the walks.

VISUALLY impaired people living in Leominster are being invited to join a regular walk in the town.

Brothers Kevin and Jason Stuchbery, have been giving up their spare time to lead a regular Wednesday afternoon walk for people with a visual impairment.

They have been trained as walk leaders and have received additional training to enable them to safely lead visually impaired walkers.

The brothers, who are supported by Leominster charity ECHO, are now seeking new walkers to join their group.

Denise Kerwood, volunteer co-ordinator for ECHO, said that Kevin and Jason, who have learning disabilities, have been leading the walk for five years and are regularly joined by 10 people.

"The walk has become very popular and when the brothers were asked if they would like to take on the extra challenge of leading visually impaired people they accepted without hesitation," she said.

"Each walk lasts an hour, follows a different route each week and is free."

It is the first of its kind in the country and has been praised by the national walk promotion body –Walking for Health – for its innovation and enterprise.

Leominster has recently attained the Walkers are Welcome accreditation and this is just one of many initiatives the town promotes to enable people to enjoy the health benefits of taking regular walks in the company of others.

Both visually impaired and sighted people can meet in Corn Square on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm.

Anyone with visual impairment who would like to find out can call Denise on 01568 620307 or email denise.kerwood@echoherefordshire.co.uk
