KNIGHTON Community First Responders have received the NHS Direct Central and West Regions, volunteers of the year award for their work in Knighton and the surrounding area.

The Knighton responders started eleven years ago and currently have a team of fourteen volunteers who in 2013 received 288 calls. The responders are called to patients when the ambulance cannot get to the scene within four minutes.

The responders are trained to treat people with breathing problems caused by heart attacks, strokes, angina, asthma or panic attack and to reassure and comfort people in times of need.

If anyone is interested in joining the team the next training session is in August. For more information contact Brian Jones on 01547 528031.
