PARISH COUNCIL - There will be a meeting of Bishopstone Group Parish Council tonight at the New Bridge community centre at 7.30pm. Among the items on the agenda for consideration are planning applications for conversion of outbuildings at The Cottage Bishopstone and for proposed erection of poultry buildings at Flag Station Mansel Lacy, and an appeal regarding refusal of planning permission for erection of a house on land adjoining the Lord Nelson Antiques Centre, Bishopstone. THE BODENHAM LITTER PICK - The litter pick on April 5 was a great success. There were 27 bags of rubbish collected, plus a number of items too large to fit in a bag. Thanks go to the many volunteers who took part, and to Balfour Beatty who provided all the necessary equipment. It is hoped the exercise won’t have to be repeated too often.
BODENHAM PARISH COUNCIL - The next meeting of the parish council will take place at 7.30pm on Monday at the Siward James Centre. The meeting will commence with the annual parish meeting and the annual parish council meeting. Copies of the agenda and draft minutes of the previous meeting are placed in advance on parish notice boards and on the parish website (bodenhamparish.org.uk). THE BODENHAM ROMANIA SUPPORT GROUP - The group will be holding a knit-in today at 14 Brockington Road from 2pm to 4pm. BODENHAM PARISH HALL - The parish hall committee will meet in the hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday. Members will be looking at the building itself and will be exploring the pros and cons of installing solar roof panels.

100 CLUB DRAW - The Friends of St Andrew 100 Club draw took place in the Red Lion Inn on May 1. It was hosted by Jenny Forsyth and Doris Howels. COFFEE, CAKE AND MARKET - There will be a coffee morning in Bredwardine village hall on May 9 from 10am until midday. This is a chance to meet up with old and new friends over coffee and cake.
Included in the market are a number of stalls selling fresh vegetables, home-baked cakes, jams and chutneys and we have regular visits from Noggins, a local pork butcher. Alongside this there are stalls selling arts and craft, music and films, knitwear and jewellery created by local artists. FOOD DONATION BASKET - The Community Larder is Hereford’s food bank and provides bags of food to those in urgent need.
Every week this organisation gives emergency food parcels to families who find themselves in serious and sudden hardship.

MEETINGS - The Wyeside Group Parish AGM is in Bredwardine village hall on Tuesday, beginning at 7.30pm. This is a chance for locals to ask questions and talk with parish council members and to learn more about the Neighbourhood Plan, which is being drawn up on behalf of the village. The village hall AGM follows the parish AGM and is also in the village hall. Brinsop
ST GEORGE BANNER - returns in time for saint’s day.
Parishioners at St George’s Church, Brinsop are celebrating the return of a banner of England’s patron saint just in time for the saints day. The banner shows a dramatic figure of an armour clad saint on a white charger piercing a green dragon- like creature through the mouth.
Created for the church in 1906 by the celebrated church furnisher Sir Ninian Comper, the banner was losing the silk backing that supported it and generally showing its age. Now it has been lovingly restored by Kathleen Hollands and a team of heritage volunteers from the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts (NADFAS) who specialise in restoring needlework. The now resplendent banner has been restored to its place in St George’s church, Brinsop. Just in front of the church is the well where, according to Herefordshire folklore, the dragon lived before his fatal encounter with the saint.
The banner, which cost £26 at the time it was made, is part of a series of fine adornments to the small church commissioned by the then proprietors of Brinsop Court, the Astley family. These, together with a mediaeval carved panel of St George, part of the Herefordshire School of Carving, have made St George’s one of England’s thousand best churches’ according to the writer Simon Jenkins in his book of that name.
St George’s Brinsop is open to visitors every day during daylight hours.

How Caple
HOW CAPLE MYSTERY PLAY - Dozens of people poured down the lane as they would have done in ancient times to witness this mystery play for Easter.
Cast mingled with audience until the incumbent vicar called for the production to begin.
Clad in golden/brown robes the Daily Mail’s often acerbic theatre critic turned writer/director, Quentin Letts, rang a hand bell and Adam and Eve (Will and Debbie Edwards) clad in flesh coloured onesies and little else, appeared in the Garden of Eden.
No need for scenery.
The churchyard surrounded by a wall with the church as a backdrop was enough with a ‘throne’ for God (John Watkins), resplendent in purple robes and a massive curly grey beard, more than satisfied with his creation. Lucifer (alias Charles Gething Lewis, aka church warden) soon spoils the idyllic scene, tempting Eve to eat an apple conveniently hanging, out of season, from a tree.
In true mystery tradition (or is it pantomime?), the crowd hissed the Devil and sent him packing.
Scenes and audience moved around the churchyard with Quentin narrating in a loud clear voice where necessary, the crowd jeering or applauding when appropriate.
Much was packed into this 90 minute production. From the killing of Abel (Chris Carter), by Cain (Steve Dean), the mighty flood with Noah and his wife arguing about the necessity of building an Arc, Abraham (Alex Aldrich-Blake) about to sacrifice his son Isaac (Sebastian Lee) and Joseph’s horror on discovering his virgin wife was pregnant.
A very pretty Mary the younger (Eveleen Letts), appeared to struggle to keep her advanced ‘pregnancy’ from falling around her knees.
King Herod orders the killing of the innocents and Simeon (Greg Clifford), once he has seen the baby Jesus sings the Nunc Dimittis and expires realistically by the church door.
Cue cards were in evidence, attached to clothing or props.
Some used them more than others but the odd ad lib added to the fun.
Cod medieval verse was nobody’s usual form of speech.
Tambourine, drum, clarinet and violin, with backing choir, all from the usual congregation ably lead by organist and choir mistress, Lois Letts, provided suitable music, often off key but realistic for the period.
Once inside the church there was the funeral of Lazarus, the story of the Last Supper, Pilate consulting the crowd and so to the crucifixion. Finally, the resurrection with a rousing rendition of the hymn, Jesus Christ is Risen Today by cast and audience.
The entire cast can be very proud of this production. Several characters had multiple parts with rapid costume changes.
Congratulations to Dee Taylor and Liz Parry-Jones for the authentic and imaginative wardrobe. Every actor played their part/parts admirably, providing plenty of humour and action to keep the interest of well over a hundred people.
The rain kept off, the sun shone, it was free entertainment and biscuits and ginger beer were dispensed by the cast at the end.
The production was certainly a triumph for Quentin Letts whose enthusiasm and drive pulled the whole thing together.

COMMUNITY MARKET - As well as the usual great mix of stalls selling local produce and crafts, Knighton community market on Saturday will feature a Tastes of Palestine stall presented by the Knighton Palestine Links Group.
Tasty Palestinian delicacies will be on offer, as well as a chance to meet Ibrahem Badwan who comes from Azzoun, a Palestinian town that a group of Knighton people have forged strong links with in recent years. Ibrahem will be helping on a pop-up Palestinian stall which will allow shoppers to sample and buy some of these wonderful products as well as hear about what life is like living in the occupied Palestinian territories. Ibrahem is an EVS volunteer, working in London for five months for Camden Abudis Friendship Association (camdenabudis.net). Ibrahem will spend 10 days in Knighton giving talks to various schools and groups, and he will meet MP Roger Williams informally.
Several people from Knighton have been to Azzoun over the last two years and Ibrahem and his family have given them great hospitality. He will be among friends here who are delighted to be able to repay his family’s generosity.
Also at the Saturday market there will be live folk music to get feet tapping in the cafe area courtesy of members of the Teme Valley Ceilidh Band. As usual, the market starts at 9.30am and finishes at 12.30pm and will be warm and dry whatever the weather.

RED SPARROWS FLY INTO KNIGHTON - The group is very keen on promoting all that’s healthy and fun and has a fun day planned on June 21 to kick start its campaign. CONFIRMATIONS - At Leominster Priory. Parents and friends of 27 confirmation candidates from Leominster and the surrounding area packed Leominster Priory on April 27 and were welcomed by Rector Michael Kneen. The confirmations were performed by Bishop Alister Magowan, Bishop of Ludlow. He talked in his address, based on the Beatitudes, about the importance of Christian values for life, in a world offering a vast variety of other lifestyles. Three of the candidates were baptised by the bishop before confirmation. It was a service of joy and thanksgiving for the commitments of these candidates, from all ages, and prayers were said for them as they began their new lives of hope in Jesus Christ. The whole congregation thanked God for continuing to call people to his service.

OVAL STOCK CAR NATIONAL – The Hereford Radio Car Club are hosting round one of the BRCA 1/12 scale Oval Stock Car National. The club at Wellington race most Friday nights and this is the biggest event of the season for the club. The event is held at Wellington school on Sunday.

Hereford Guild of Guides
DAILY guided walks of Hereford City start on Saturday at 11.30am from the north porch of the cathedral and continue every day until the end of October. On Sundays they start at 2.30pm.
They last about one and a half hours and cost £4 per adult; £1 per child aged six to 12.

Herefordshire Health Service Retirement Fellowship
THE next NHS Retirement Fellowship (HHSRF) meeting will be held on May 19 at 2pm in the St John’s Methodist hall, St Owen Street, Hereford.
The guest speaker this month is Colin Javens who will be giving his presentation entitled Driving Cissie Home. His talk promises to be good fun.
The new programme for 2014/15 will be available for members at the May meeting.
The next organised social event is a visit to the cathedral gardens, in Hereford, on June 23 followed by an optional cream tea in one of the cathedral function rooms.
The next Fellowship Amblers Walk will be on June 3 weather permitting. Details will be given at the May meeting.

Wellington Garden Club
THE next meeting of the garden club will be held on next Thursday, May 15, starting at 7.30pm in the community centre.
This month members will be welcoming the return of Leila Jackson who is an enthusiastic and passionate plantswoman, with a different topic — that of the versatile Campanula.
As usual there will be refreshments and a raffle and visitors are always welcome.
Knighton First Responders
KNIGHTON First Responders received cash from two fund-raising events. A twelve hour darts marathon held at the RAFA club in Knighton raised £1018, £518 of this was donated to the responders, the rest went towards the running and upkeep of the club. The event was organised by Jamie Licence, Sally Ann Rowlands and others.
Sarah Branford and David Minton raised £204 by donating Easter eggs, biscuits and other chocolates to make up an Easter hamper. The two who work in SPAR, Knighton then sold raffle tickets.
The winner of the raffle was Peter Medlicott.
The money was presented to Knighton First Responders by Sally-Ann Rowlands, David Minton and Sarah Branford.
Knighton First Responders is looking for new recruits. Full training will be given if anyone is interested in joining the team please ring 01547 52801 for further details.
Knighton Macmillan Cancer Support Group
AT the annual meeting of the Knighton Macmillan Cancer Support group chairman Liz George welcomed members and Nicola Newhams the regional fundraising officer for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Nicola thanked the group for inviting her and for all the hard work they do raising money throughout the year.
The meeting started with the minutes of the 2013 AGM being read by secretary Louise Hardwick.
Next there was the chairman’s report by Liz George.
Liz started her report by paying tribute to the late Jean Kilby who before her death was group secretary and did so much for the group.
Liz also praised the work Gladys Vogel has done over the years for the group.
Gladys is now too poorly to attend meetings. The two women were founder members and on the group’s committee for more than 40 years.
She went on to welcome new secretary Louise Hardwick who has taken over her grandmother Jean Kilby’s role.
Liz said: “I would like to thank Louise for all the work she has done so far”.
Liz also thanked Louise’s parents Mike and Maureen Conway for all their support, John and Brenda Morgan for opening their garden at Pontfean house to raise money for Macmillan and everyone who supported their fund raising events throughout the year or gave donations.
The treasurers report by Pam Mills followed. Pam said that the group had had a very good year raising a total of £5104.50 at their events including the Macmillan walk, strawberry tea, open gardens teas, coffee morning , Christmas fair and table sales.
The election of officers then took place. It was proposed and seconded that the chairman, secretary, treasurer and other officers stayed the same as the previous year.
In the last year £32,766 came to Powys and 106 people and their families were helped by Macmillan Cancer Support.
The next fund raising event of the Knighton Macmillan group will be their annual Macmillan walk on May 20.
The walk will start at the back of the Knighton Hotel at 7pm and then go up Broad Street, to the Offa’s Dyke Centre, down to the river, back into town via Kinsley Road finishing at the Horse and Jockey for light refreshments donated by Jacqui and Gary Salt.
Sponsor forms are currently available in SPAR, the library and the Offa’s Dyke Centre.
