HEREFORD MP Jesse Norman checked out Holmer School on Friday to see its budding chess players in action.

Mr Norman took part in a simultaneous display against the school's elite development squad as they prepare for the international Yes2Chess online tournament later this month.

The pupils will initially take part in national qualifying rounds, with the overall winner representing the UK in the grand final in London in July.

"It was fantastic to meet the young students from the school chess programme and play against them in the simultaneous display," said Mr Norman.

"There are some strong players at Holmer and they should have a great chance in the Yes2Chess tournament.

"It would be fantastic if they were able to win the UK section of the tournament and go on to represent our country in the international final later in the year."

Malcolm Pein, chief executive of Chess in Schools and Communities, added that Mr Norman is an accomplished player.

"I am sure the children learnt a lot from the games," said Mr Pein.

"This will be a massive boost for them as they prepare for the Yes2Chess international tournament."
