A NEW footpath and bridge could be built to provide a safer route for children attending a Hereford primary school.

Herefordshire Council is proposing the scheme near Trinity Primary School that would link Bakers Lane to the Yazor footpath.

The two-metre wide path and bridge will aim to form a safe and convenient route for parents parking at the Range store.

"The main reason for the footpath and bridge is to provide a safer route to school for the 400 plus children who would use it twice every school day," reads the design and access statement.

"In addition, it will help to connect the Moor Farm estate with the stores, shops and surgery on Three Elms Road and Grandstand Road and it will create the last link in an excellent route of the open space and housing open space land, thus encouraging people to walk more."

A survey undertaken at Trinity Primary School concluded that 77 per cent of people were in favour of the bridge and footpath, stating that it is a long-awaited scheme that would benefit a lot of people.

And in a written submission to Herefordshire Council, Councillor Liz Chave, ward member for Three Elms, said that she was supportive of the idea, adding that she hoped it would alleviate the traffic problems in the area.

If approved, the bridge would be nine-metres long with a barrier fence and top hand rail on each side.
