MEP welcomes survey backing European Union

ONE of Herefordshire’s MEPs has welcomed a survey of Britain’s manufacturers backing the country remaining in the European Union.
A poll from the manufacturers' association EEF, which represents 6,000 firms of all sizes across the UK, found that 85% of its members would vote to remain in the EU.
The manufacturers claimed EU membership is critical to their exports and that the economic benefits of the Single Market far outweigh concerns about regulation. A third said that if the UK was to leave the EU, they would be less likely to increase investment in Britain.
Phil Bennion, one of the county’s MEP, said the message from manufacturers is clear. “Tens if not hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs in the West Midlands region are linked to European and world exports and our position in the single market,” he added. "We need to encourage more jobs, not put them at risk by pulling out.”
Mr Bennion added that his Liberal Democrat party is determined that Britain should take the lead to make industry in the EU as competitive as possible, not sit on the sidelines. He said: "Let's not kid ourselves, trade deals with the USA or China worth billions will be done with the EU as a whole, not with Britain on her own. We are far too small.”
"Like Richard Branson and Hitachi, we must spell out how dreadful the consequences would be for Britain to leave the EU.”
